U.S. Mission Welcomes U.S. Professor to UNESCO Ethics Advisory Board
The U.S. Mission to UNESCO welcomes Georgetown University professor, Dr. Henry S. Richardson, to UNESCO’s ethics advisory body, the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST). Dr. Richardson participated in COMEST’s June 28 – 30 Extraordinary Session at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, where members of the U.S. Mission to UNESCO had an opportunity to meet with him and welcome him to the Organization.
COMEST is a panel of 18 independent experts from around the world who collaborate to advise the Director General on ethical issues relating to science and technology. The Commission is currently studying ethical issues in fields such as climate change, environmental ethics, and emerging technologies.
Dr. Richardson is a Professor of Philosophy, specializing in the study of practical reasoning – a subject on which he has published several books. He currently serves as the editor of the philosophy journal Ethics and was previously a visiting scholar at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Richardson received his Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, J.D., and PhD from Harvard University.
