Ambassador Killion Hosts a "Redhot & Blue" Reception to Mark the Closing of Executive Board
To mark the closing of the 186th Executive Board, Ambassador Killion hosted a swinging soiree, with music by Yale's award winning a cappella group, Redhot & Blue. The group dazzled with its soulful renditions of jazz standards, from George Gershwin's "Summertime" to Steve Perry's "Zoot Suit Riot". The United States has a rich a cappella tradition, from barbershop to doo wop to modern pop, and a cappella groups have also become a common feature of University life in the U.S. Redhot & Blue was created as Yale's first co-ed a cappella group in 1977 and has been winning praise ever since for its unique brand of vocal jazz.
The event was attended by members of several UNESCO delegations, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, and the Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergei Ryabkov. In his remarks, the Ambassador praised the collaboration and cooperation demonstrated at the 186th Executive board. "Just in the last couple of weeks, we've seen history being made and been able to work together to find agreeable solutions to critical issues like education, support for the sciences and I think most importantly, resolution on some thorny issues... Together, we've all laid the groundwork for an even more productive Executive Board and General Conference this fall."
