Statement by the United States on items 202 EX/38 and 39

(c) UNESCO A. Dunasovs

The United States welcomes the agreements among key parties here at UNESCO to postpone consideration of these two items, as we have consistently objected to such one-sided and divisive resolutions.

While a postponement itself does not resolve the underlying issues, it will be imperative for all sides and this Executive Board to work in the coming months, with a new Director General, to build a more constructive process here that addresses the fundamental concerns of all, avoids further damage to the credibility of UNESCO, and supports broader efforts toward peace in the region.

The United States has consistently supported a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.  Such an agreement cannot be imposed, and must be negotiated directly between the two parties.  The United States will continue to work closely with the leadership of both toward that goal.
